Many of us try hard to create the perfect vacation – one that our family will talk about for years to come. My goal for you is to fully enjoy your time away with family and friends, having the energy and strength to make it a lasting memory.
Unfortunately, in our eagerness to do everything, we often do too much. We wake up earlier than usual and are on the run all day. We try to cram in as much as we possibly can in a short amount of time, running around amusement parks, historic sights, and national monuments. We eat non-stop, including unaccustomed delicacies, and grab snacks and beverages on the street or on the go. We eat dinner late and stay up later.
My advice to my clientwho are concerned about the myriad pitfalls on the vacation highway is: “Enjoy yourself!” Donʼt be so concerned about every little detail relating to your fitness plan that you isolate yourself, take the fun out of your vacation, and ruin it for others. Allow yourself the opportunity to enjoy foods which you donʼt normally eat. It is OK to taste and sample foods that you have heard about or always wanted to try. Give yourself permission, eat it, and enjoy!
On the other hand, during the greater part of your day, make every attempt to keep eating healthy foods and to watch your portion sizes. Keep your food choices in balance overall. It’s OK to have a fancy drink for which the locale is famous, or to taste some exotic food, or to share an extraordinary dessert. But the next day, try not to indulge, and keep up with your exercise. I recommend naturally creating scenarios in which the entire family can enjoy moving together. Get the entire family going every day with activities such as walking or hiking, biking or mountain biking, horseback riding, whitewater rafting, snow skiing or water skiing, scuba diving, snorkeling, or even surfing. Heck, if you are traveling with family or friends, you may get the whole group doing your 10-minute workouts with you!
