The Secret Ingredient to Getting Fit and Staying Fit!

Trivia Anyone?

“What does Bill Gates, Michael Jordan, Tiger Woods, George W. Bush, Oprah Winfrey and Olympic Gold medalist Bonnie Blair all have in common?”

Your first thought, like mine, might be “success” and while that is true of each of these individuals believe it or not they all attribute their personal success to one thing…. “a mentor” or “coach”! All of these individuals have attained the success they now enjoy to one degree or another by having a “coach” or a “mentor”, someone who has instructed, encouraged, pushed, trained and brought the best out of them assisting in reaching their levels of personal greatness.

Similarly when it comes to attaining our personal health and fitness goals researchers have found “coaching”, “ongoing support” and “encouragement” are crucial to beginning and sustaining lasting personal progress!

“Research has shown that nearly 80% of all attempts to improve lifestyle related health habits, without ongoing support end in failure.”

Helping relationships such as a friend, spouse or a coach can assist you in being honest with yourself providing encouragement, accountability and support. A non-judgmental caring relationship can provide you with an added dose of reality in overcoming resurfacing habits, tempting situations or faulty negative thinking.

We want to encourage you to buddy up with someone close to you who can help keep you accountable to the goals you set for yourself! For example,

  1. Ask your neighbor to workout with you
  2. Tell your best friend to call you once a week to see how you are doing
  3. Ask your spouse to exercise with you
  4. Every weekend get the family involved and walk or bike together
  5. Get a professional fitness coach or trainer to work with you.
  6. Follow your favorite fitness and nutrition coaches on Twitter or Facebook. e.g. “take10coach” (hint, hint)
