Did you know most of us will gain about four to five pounds during the holidays? The average person will consume approximately 2 ½ pounds of extra calories extra during Christmas or holiday dinners.
During this time of year we are bombarded with temptations of delicious treats and extravagant dinners, not to mention inactivity!
I’d like to show you some ways to get fit or stay fit during the holidays!
1. Fuel Frequently: Eat at least 3-4 small meals before your holiday dinner or party.
Most of us think if we skip breakfast and lunch we are doing ourselves a favor before our big holiday party or dinners! Thinking we are saving calories for the good stuff! Unfortunately skipping meals decreases your metabolism and energy as well as makes your cranky and ravenous with little resolve when you get to the party!
Don’t skip meals, try to eat something every 3 hours before the big party and just eat sensibly. Start your day off with a bowl of whole grain cereal and skim or low-fat milk or a big bowl of oatmeal with a piece of fruit for breakfast, then for a mid-morning snack combine some almonds with raisins or peanut butter and an apple, followed by a healthy lunch with a large salad topped with lean turkey and light dressing or a chicken or a whole grain tuna sandwich and another piece of fruit. Lastly, a few hours before your party, eat another snack, such as a light yogurt with walnuts or string cheese with whole grain crackers just in case dinner is served later than you anticipated. Eating this way will help you feel energetic and with ready to enjoy the party!
